Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor is an action role-playing game set in an open-world version of Tolkien’s Middle-earth. You play as Talion, a ranger who develops wraith-like magical abilities after coming back from the dead. You’ll decide whether to develop Talion’s wraith skills or his ranger skills as you journey to familiar Tolkien locations on a quest to return to Mordor and pay Sauron back for that whole “killing you” thing. There are a ton of optional side quests, and the new Nemesis System makes Middle-earth more personal by remembering players’ interactions with specific types of NPCs and adjusting how those characters react later. That includes enemies, of course, some of whom will curse your name and seek you out for revenge! Fan-favorite Gollum even shows up as an NPC.

Dragon Age: Inquisition offers tons of the deep, ambitious RPG action that fans of the Dragon Age series crave. A continuation of the plot from Dragon Age II, Inquisition puts the player in the middle of an all-out war between mages and Templars. As the Inquisitor, the player’s decisions shape the complex plot, relationships with NPCs and party members, and the entire game world itself. You can choose to open up new parts of the map to explore, or destroy villages and all the story points and characters within them. The world is bigger than in previous games and there is an extra race to choose (the Qunari join Humans, Dwarves, and Elves as a playable race). The party-based combat system has been made more tactical and complex. Overall, Inquisition aims to be the best Dragon Age yet.

Overview: Set in North America during the bloody Seven Years War, this action-adventure game lets you play as Shay Patrick Cormac, an assassin whose life has history-wide implications. Cormac’s journey is from Assassin to Assassin-Hunter, so he’ll use all of his skills and training to take down his ex-brothers. The open-world setting and stealth gameplay mechanics from previous AC games are back, as are the naval battles from Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. This time your ship can navigate rivers. You’ll also have a new arsenal of weapons to choose from. New ship-based weapons include an oil slick, which can be ignited. Personal weaponry features the customizable air rifle, which allows you to silently strike down enemies from very far away.

All this technology changes the nature of fighting in COD. The new weapons behave differently than previous guns, and the HUD offers never-before-seen levels of tactical knowledge to every man on the battlefield. Not everything has changed, though – COD’s tight-as-a-drum controls and realistic graphics are represented in spades.

This first-person, survival-horror stealth game takes the Alien franchise back to its inception. Like the first Alien movie, this one is heavy on dread, horror, and dark corridors. You play as Amanda, whose investigation of Ripley’s disappearance is interrupted by the slimy, acid-blooded Alien that murdered the crew of Ripley’s vessel. Alien: Isolation is all about a head-to-head battle of wits with the creature, and the AI shows it. The Alien hunts the player through sound, sight, and smell, and its reactions are clever enough that you’ll swear it’s actually alive. The AI “learns” through your actions, at the same time you learn how the Aliens behaves. The levels are non-linear, with multiple routes and randomized placement of objects, so players can enjoy a different terrifying experience every time they play.
